Westbury - NL Champs!

Congrtulations on Westbury advancing to their first BYOF World Series. They advance after a defeating Houston in a thrilling 7 game series. Congrats to Scott and Houston on a great season.

(thanks to Earl for the write up)

Game 1 - It starts as a pitching duel between Webb & Halladay. Westbury starts with a run in the 5th on a double play hit by I. Rod. Then they get 3 in the 6th on an RBI triple by Pujols. Houston would chip away with a run in the 6th, 7th & 8th but the Westbury bullpen gets the final 4 batters to preserve a 4-3 win
Halladay - win, Webb - loss, F. Rod - save -noGW RBI

Game 2 - Houston jumps quickly to a 4-0 lead off of Santana but Westbury comes right back with 4 in the 5th to take a 5-4 lead. But this time the Westbury bullpen would fail as the inning starts on a Freel error and it would lead to 2 unearned runs,,,Houston bullpen did the job and they pulled even with a 8-5 win..Wang - win Dempster - loss - wagner save GW RBI- Church

Game 3 - Roger Clemens and Bob Howry combine on a 8 hit shutout and Westbury hits 6 solo homers (5 off of Weaver) in a 9-0 win...
Clemens - win Weaver - loss GW RBI - Beltran

Game 4 - Houston evens it up as 4 pitchers combine on a 9 hit shutout. Westbury left bases loaded in 3rd, and two men on in the 7th & 9th with no success. Not much offense for Houston as they only had 4 hits, but an RBI single by Craig Wilson and some insurance of 2 unearned runs were more than enough... Verlander - win Billingsley - loss, Bradford - save

Game 5 - Halladay gets hit around for 6 runs...Houston cruises behind Webb in a 6-2 win... Webb goes to 1-1, Halladay drops to 1-1

Game 6 - This game made the 75 WS game 6 look boring....
Vlad starts off with a solo shot in the 1st, then it becomes a pitching duel until the 6th. Houston scratches a run in the 6th on a Peralta single to lead 2-0
In the bottom of the 6th, Wang hit a wall - he gave up 4 hits and a walk with 2 outs and Westbury jumped to a 5-2 lead.Wes Helms would tie it up for Houston in the top of the 7th with a 3 run homer. No more scoring for a while..In the 13th, F. Rod gave up a lead off triple to Nady. With infield way in, Peralta grounded out to short and Lopez struck out, after a IW to Lamb, F. Rod got of it with a ground out from Matheny....This would prove to hurt Houston. In the 14th - Barry Bonds hit a pinch-hit double to lead off the inning. Guillen would fly out and Beltran walked, then Wainright walked Pujols to load the bases. Finally, Juan Rivera singled to end this 14 inning instant classic 6-5
Juan Rincon - win Wainright - loss

Game 7 - this would be anti-climatic....Pujols hits a 2 run homer off of Weaver in the 1st, then in the 5th, a Valentin solo homer and a Beltran 2 run homer broke the game open..Clemens cruised through 7 shutout innings and Westbury would take the series with a 6-2 win..
Clemens -win -2-0 Weaver - loss -0-2

Notes -
Houston
Wagner, Bradford & Wheeler combined for 14 1/3 shutout innings (and 2 saves)
Jered Weaver - 8 homers surrendered in 10 2/3 innings
Vlad - 11-33, Alfonzo - 8-19, Church 6-9 .. Lopez - 3-27

Westbury
Clemens 2-0, 15 1/3 shutout innings
Guillen -11-28, Beltran 10-26, Valentin - 8-22 (3hr), Utley 5-31

Cincy advances to 2nd World Series

The Cincy RedStockings advances to the World Series with a thrilling 4 games to 1 win over the Windsor Tigers

Game #1 Derek Lowe (15-9 4.41) and Mike Mussina (18-11 2.68), lock up in a great pitching duel until the 7th when Jim Edmonds and Frank Thomas hit back-to-back homers. Three Cincy relievers shut the door for the RedStockings.

Cincy 2-0 Windsor W-Matt Smith 1-0 sv-Denny Reyes 1 L-Mike Mussina 0-1

Game #2 10 innings is played before a Mark DeRosa SF plates Jim Edmonds who had reached on a Travis Hafner error. A see saw battle as Jay Payton's 2 out 2 run homer in the 4th breaks open a scoreless pitching performance by Kenny Rogers, 17-12 4.01. Cincy plates single runs in the 5th and 6th versus King Hernandez and then Francisco Liriano, the 2nd run, unearned, after a error by Hafner, who had two for the game, the other, a Frank Thomas home run of Felix. A Beltre homer in the 7th puts the Tigers up but the game is tied up on a 2 out single by Gerald Laird off Mariano Rivera in the 8th. Frank Thomas goes 5-5. Felix Hernandez, 18-7 3.29, tosses 4 1/3 innings, allowing only one unearned run.

Cincy 4-3 Windsor W-Mike Myers 1-0 sv-Denny Reyes 2 L-Trevor Hoffman

Game #3 Cincy goes up 3 games to none as Eric Milton, 9-5 5.34, and six RedStockings relievers limit the potent Tigers offense to six hits and one run. After both teams trade runs in the 1st, a JD Drew triple gives Cincy the lead in the 3rd and they tack on an insurance run on a Hanley Ramirez error in the 4th. Five shutout innings by the Windsor bullpen in relief of Jake Peavy, 18-10 4.28, and a 3-3 night by Jay Payton go for naught.

Cincy 3-1 Windsor W-Brendan Donnelly 1-0 sv-Mike Myers 1 L-Jake Peavy 0-1

Game #4 Windsor pounds Cincy 7-3, spotting them a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st before storming back with 3 of their own in the bottom. Runs are added in the 3rd, 5th, and 6th off the RedStockings staff while the Tigers bullpen throw 8 consecutive shutout innings. Hafner homers twice, Belte and Wells, once each to lead the offensive onslaught. Jeremy Bonderman, 14-12 4.04 lasts only one innings, allowing 3 earned runs.

Windsor 3-7 Cincy W-Francisco Liriano 1-0 L-Sowers 0-1

Game #5 Derek Lowe gives the RedStockings six strong innings as 3 run homers by Corey Koskie in the 3rd and Frank Thomas in the 5th give Cincy an early 6-1 lead before the bullpen shuts Windsor down. Travis Hafner's 3 run homer spoils what was otherwise a brilliant start by Lowe but only makes the score 7-4.

Cincy 7-4 Windsor W-Derek Lowe 2-0 sv-Denny Reyes 3 L-Mike Mussina 0-2

Other highlights of the series.

Cincy bullpen 17 2/3 2 runs, 1.02 ERA
Windsor bullpen 26 2/3 3 runs 1.01 ERA led by Liriano with 10 innings, 2 runs, 15 strikeouts

Frank Thomas, series MVP, .421 BA, .476 OBP. and .895 SLG. Very timely hitting.

Alabama would come fighting in the bottom of the 7th when Sandy Alomar hit a pinch hit 2-run homerun to make the game 4-3. That’s as close as they would get. Cincy wins 5-3 and takes the series 4-2. Windsor wins the Canadian ALDS

Windsor defeated Winnipeg in 7 games, coming back from 3-1 down. Both Nghia and Rob are from the Toronto area. After game 3, Nghia asked Brian Toso to fill in because his schedule was too busy. Thanks Brian. Here a brief game by game. (Winnipeg took the regular season games 5-3)

Game 1: Mike Mussina took a 3-0 lead into the top of the 6th inning. Mussina would not leave the 6th as Winnipeg scored 5 runs, highlighted by a Jason Bay two run home run and a three run home run by Ty Wiggington off Reliever Todd Coffey. The Winnipeg bullpen was stellar. Winnipeg wins 5-4 and leads the series 1-0.

Game #2: A blowout win for Windsor as they score 8 in the 2nd, 5 in the 5th on route to a 19-4 win.Vernon Wells goes 4-4 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI's. Felix Hernandez picks up his first win of the series.

Note this game had a triple play. In the top of 2nd with runners on first and third, Wiggington was batting. Wigginton lined into a triple play, Hernandez (SP) to Beltre (3B)to Hafner (1B), Garciaparra out at third, Kent out at first.

Game #3: The series heads to Winnipeg. This was a beauty as Winnipeg takes game #3 2-1. Matt Morris was the star pitching 8 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 run and 3 K's. The game was decided in the 5th when Dave Roberts lined a one out triple to right center field off Liriano. Jason Bay singled him home. Winnipeg takes 2-1 series lead.

Game #4: Winnipeg continues their strong play by dominating game four, 8-1, and taking a commanding 3-1 series lead. Ohka and four relievers scattered 7 hits through nine innings. The hitting stars for Winnipeg were Bay, Garciaparra and Wiggington who each had two hits a piece. Winnipeg takes 3-1 series lead and looking to close out at home.

Game #5: With Winnipeg on the verge of the upset, Windsor wins a close high scoring game 11-7. The game was 5-5 after three innings. The star of the game was Liriano who relieved Mussina in the 3rd inning. He pitched 3 1/3 innings of shut out long relief and allowed Windsor to pick up the lead they would never lose. Winnipeg holds 3-2 series lead.

Game #6: With Windsor in a must win situation, they win 4-3 to force a game seven. This was another great game. After falling behind early, Winnipeg took a 3-2 lead into the top of the 6th, with a Garciaparra walk, Wiggington double and a Dejesus single scoring both. The Winnipeg bullpen who pitched so well all series could not hold it. Springer entered in the bottom of the 6th to face Vernon Wells and was greeted by a solo home run. The tie was broken in the bottom of 7th when lefty Scott Schoenweis was brought in to face Travis Hafner. The Windsor MVP took him deep, hitting a home run down the left field line. Ray and Hoffman pitched shut out ball to close out the game. Series tied 3-3.

Game #7: Matt Morris vs Jake Peavy. With a 2-0 lead Peavy took a no hitter into the top of the 5th. Winnipeg would score 2 runs and tie the game. In the bottom of that inning Windsor would get their 2 run lead back with a 2-run homerun by Marlon Anderson. Windsor would also add a run in the 6th and 7th to win 6-2. Stars were Anderson who had 3 RBI and the Windsor bullpen. Windsor wins 6-2 and take series 4-3.

MVP is Fransico Liriano who pitched in 4 games, 7.1 innings, giving up one run, 6 k's and a 1.23 ERA. He also won the crucial game 5 with Windsor on the verge of elimination.

Houston wins first NLDS vs Fairfax

Houston defeated Fairfax in a thrilling 7 game series. After falling behind 3-1, Houston proceeded to win the next three including the last two at Fairfax. Thanks to both Ron and Scott for the write ups.

Game 1: Fairfax coasts through most game one as early homeruns from Ryan Howard and Bobby Crosby help the Pilots build a 6-0 lead after 7 innings. Heading into the 9th inning, Fairfax leads 6-1 but after 2 singles, the Pilots call on closer Jonathan Broxton. Broxton gives up 3 hits including 2 run hits to both Jose Capellan and Stephen Drew. Drew eventually scores the tying run on an Eliezer Alfonso sacrifice fly and the game goes into extra innings. In the 12th, Franklin Gutierrez leads off with a single and after a walk to Aaron Boone, Gutierrez score on an Ichiro single as Fairfax manages to win the game 7-6.

Game 2: Houston takes an early lead 2-0 on a Vlad Guerrero 1st inning homerun. However after the first, Bronson Arroyo settles down and Fairfax rolls 9-2 to take a 2-0 series lead. Arroyo goes 8 innings only allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. Ichiro and Kevin Youkilis each with home runs.

Game 3: Game three went to the Oil Barons, 5 - 4. Vlad Guerrero went 3 for 4 and Derrek Lee hit a home run to lead the offense. Chien-Ming Wang pitched 8 innings, allowing two runs before giving way to Chad Bradford who tried to blow the game, allowing two runs. Adam Wainwright struck out Kevin Youkilis with runners on first and second for the final out.
Game 4: Game four was a heart breaking 7-5 loss for the Oil Barons. Billy Wagner will go down in Oil Barons lore like such guys as Mitch Williams and Donnie Moore. With a 5 - 3 lead, Wagner was brought in to close it out in the ninth. After getting Phillips to fly to left for the first out, the wheels came off. Pinch hitter Toby Hall doubled, followed by back to back singles by Ichiro and Kevin Youkilis, making the score 5 - 4. Wagner now faced Ryan Howard, who Oil Baron's management had carefully avoided pitching to through the games at home. With no where to put him, Wagner was forced to confront the big man . . . and lost. Howard crushed a three run, back breaking home run.

Game 5: In game five, the Oil Barons bounced back, showing heart. They knocked Fairfax ace Brad Penny out of the game after only one and a third innings in which he allowed seven earned runs. Going into the top of the 7th, the Barons led 11 - 2. The Pilots showed their championship heart in the seventh, sending 12 runners to the plate and scoring six runs, closing the gap to 11 - 8. The Barons elected to send Chad Bradford out to pitch both the eight and the ninth innings and, unlike highly paid closer Billy Wagner, he got the save and even managed to get big Ryan Howard to ground meekly to the mound in the ninth.

Game 6: The Pilots lead 3-2 as the series heads back to Fairfax. Houston once again gets an early lead on 1st inning Vlad Guerrero single. A mike Lamb single makes it 2-0 in the 5th. In the bottom of the 5th, Ichiro triples and scores on a Kevin Youkilis sacrifice fly and then Fairfax takes advantage of wildness from Houston starter Jered Weaver and ties the game on a bases-loaded walk to John Rodriguez. In the top of the 7th, Gary Mathews triples to drive in Eliezer Alfonzo, Mathews then scores on a Mike Lamb sacrifice. Houston makes the 4-2 score stand up as Billy Wagner finishes with a 1-2-3 ninth. Series tied 3-3.

Game 7: Houston's Wang and Fairfax's Sanchez were locked in a 1-1 pitchers dual through six innings. Fairfax decides to send their Sanchez, their 12-1 rookie out for the 7th. With one out and two men on Fairfax lets Sanchez pitch to Vlad, and he hits a deep homerun down the left field line. Wheeler, Bradford and Wagner pitch a scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth. Houston wins 4-1 and advances to their first NLCS.

Congrats to Ron on a great year!
