Huntsville Locks Up NL Central

The Hundsville Hardballers cliched the NL Central division on the road vs the Midgard Serpents. This was a classic matchup with the first and second place clubs in the NL Central facing off in the final series of September.

Hunstsville clinched on the second last day winning 12-4. Zito pitched a solid 7 IP giving up 1 ER and striking out 5. The hitting star was Pujols going 3 for 5 and 3 RBI's.

Boxscore and Summary

Midgard has the 2nd best record in the NL and will clich the wildcard.

Rob Nen's Last Pitch

The story of the 2002 World Series is written in ThunderStix and Rally Monkeys.

It's the story of the Anaheim Angels taking Games 6 and 7 and claiming their first world championship. There are pages on Scott Spiezio's improbable home run. There are long, rhapsodic passages written about Frankie Rodriguez's whipsaw motion and wicked breaking balls. And there are whole chapters dedicated to the power of Troy Glaus.

But there's a footnote to the story, too, a bit maybe only the folks in San Francisco still carry with them. It's a little something about losing heroically, about laying it all on the line and having everything you've got not be enough.

Call it the Robb Nen note.

Tigers Clinch the AL West

The Windsor Tigers have won their first AL Western Division Pennant. It also was Rich Harden's 21st victory. It happened during game #1 vs the KC Monarchs.

Boxscore and Summary

Near No-Hitter

Philly Smackdown's Eric Dubose, of all people, pitched 8 2/3 innings of no-hit ball against the dominant Hunstville Hardballers. Shea Hillenbrand broke up the no hitter with a seeing eye single off of the second basemen's glove. Dubose then gave up a couple of runs but came out with the win.

So far, it's been an up and down month for Philly's second favorite team (after the Eagles). The Smackdown had a great series against the Hardballers, winning 4 of 6, including sweeping a double-header against Johan Santana and Pedro Martinez as well as the afore-mentioned near-no-hitter, but then fell flat on their face against the Midgard Serpents, losing 5 of 6, including many in the 8th and 9th innings.

Results will be posted to the yahoo site soon.

September Important?

Usually in September we talk about wildcard races and division titles. Sadly in BYOF this September very little is on the line.

AL -- Beartooth, Phoenix, Alabama and Windsor all wrapped up playoff spots last month.

What to watch for: Beartooth has a 4 game lead for the division over Alabama

NL -- Huntsville, Midgard and Dayton have all wrapped up playoff spots.

What to watch for: Atlanta holds a 4 game lead over Warrington in the NL East. The winner goes to the playoffs and loser is out. Who ever finshes 2nd in the NL Central (Huntsville or Midgard) will take the Wildcard.

Harden 20 wins

Rich Harden has won 20 games for the Tigers. He won 6-2 vs the Red Stockings. Personally this is pretty neat since it's my first year in the league.

The only real question now is whether Harden get's the game one start in the playoffs over Zambrano.
