Build Your Own Franchise Computer Baseball
League is intended for the fun and enjoyment of all its league members.
1.2
The purpose of the league is to simulate
building a franchise from a deep minor league system.
1.3
The league is designed to be a democratic league
with each member having the chance for input on league issues.
1.4
ML refers to major leagues and MiL refers to
minor leagues.
1.5 FA refers to free agent and MP refers to manager profile.
2.1
There is a seven-man league committee to vote on
issues pertaining to the league.
2.2
The league committee is also responsible for
reviewing the constitution prior to the upcoming season and discussing possible
new rules or ways to improve the league.
2.3
The current league committee is:
3.1 There will be two leagues of 12 teams each.
3.2 One American League that will utilize the DH and
one National League that will not utilize the DH.
3.3 The leagues will be divided into two
divisions. (East and West)
3.4 Each division will have six teams.
3.5 Team names should reflect a city, state,
country, or geographic region as their location and then another name
(nickname) will be used.
3.6
Teams will remain in their current division with
the exception that there may be re-alignment if owners request it and it is
approved by a vote of the league committee.
3.7
Teams can switch leagues. You must notify the
commissioner who then needs to determine if there is another team also willing
to switch.
4.1 The season will coincide with the actual major
league baseball season.
4.2 The season is intended to run in monthly cycles
for six months and will include 162 games in the schedule.
4.3 Teams will play 18 games intra division and 12 games
outside the division.

disk to be eligible for the ML roster.
7.3
The monthly active roster is 25 men.
8.1
There will be a 10 man MiL roster.
8.2
The MiL roster may be filled by position players
with the following criteria:
8.3 MiL players will be designated by 'aaa' appearing before their short name on the roster. i.e., aaaGonzalez as well as given a UID of -1.
9.0 MiL/ML Roster Player Movement
9.1
MiL players may not be moved to the ML roster
during the season unless a trade or FA claim is made.
9.2
If a minor leaguer is traded, his new owner has
the option of asking that his “aaa” rating be removed, then placing him on the
new major league roster. These players must appear on the current DMB season
disk.
9.3
A major league player traded who still qualifies for the minor leagues may also be re-designated “aaa” and placed on his new
team’s Minor League roster.
9.4
FA Claims may also trigger player movement.
i.e., Demoting to the minors or promoting to the majors
9.5
ML rosters can never go over 35 men and MiL
rosters can never go over 10 men. If this happens the manager must report to
the commissioner any roster moves in order to get the roster back to 35 or 10. Trades will not be processed until these roster moves are made.
10.1 Players can play at all of their rated positions plus:
10.2 Outfielders

following month.
12.1 Free

|
Trading resumes after the ML protected lists are submitted (around October 20) |
|

|
After the MiL Draft (Around March 1st) . |
| Trading notables: |
|
Any in-season trades reported after the third Friday of the month will be completed with the next month’s database. |
|
Rosters are frozen during the ML and MiL drafts. |
|
Trades will not be executed during the draft (You may make trades but each owner is responsible for making the appropriate adjustments and then reporting the trades officially at the end of the draft). |
|
There will be a period in between the ML and MiL drafts in which to report your trades. |
16.1 Draft
picks may be traded but only for the upcoming draft.
16.2 No
draft pick can be traded for the upcoming season. i.e., 2011 draft picks cannot
be traded for 2012 draft picks
16.3 When
trading draft picks please refer to the original team, ML or MiL and the round
number. i.e., Boston trades BOS ML#3 and SEA MiL#2 to Detroit for DET ML#1 and
the DET ML#8.
17.1 In
the interest of the league as a whole, trades may be reviewed by the league
committee for approval.
17.2 A
review by the league committee will be triggered if one league member requests
it.
17.3 Approval
of a trade will consist of four of the seven league committee members voting to
approve the trade.
17.4 Any
disputes should be forwarded to commissioner directly who will then trigger the
dispute process.
17.5 If
the commissioner has made a disputed trade he will not be allowed to vote.
18.0 Create Manager Profiles (MPs)
18.1 MPs are built by managers to be used on the road while the computer is playing your team.
18.2 MPs are due out by the first of the month.
18.3 MPs
are to be placed in the team’s folder on the Yahoo site.
18.4 MPs
are to be series specific so the opposing manager does not need to do anything
in order to play the series. i.e., the home manager should just load your
profile and have it run with the computer manager.
18.5 The
active team roster will be 25 players for each series. The 25 players may vary
from series to series within the month.
18.6 The
active rosters will be expanded up to 35 ML players during the last month of
play. A team cannot use more than 35 players over the course of the last month.
19.1 You
must set your rotation for each specific series that you're playing.
19.2 MP
Steps:
20.1 Each
manager is responsible for creating lineups for each series.
20.2 Lineups
should be created for games against a LHP and RHP (with and without DH when
needed).
21.1 All
players not on your 25 man active roster should be farmed.
21.2 You
should also farm players who you don’t want to appear in a road series. i.e.,
low usage.
21.3 Home
Managers should never farm players for his opponents unless specifically asked
to in the special instructions.
21.4 Once
rotations are setup in the MP the computer will automatically farm other
starters for the series.
22.1 Managers
may submit special instructions for a series.
22.2 Special
instructions may include things such as farming players after appearing in one
game, after so many AB’s, etc.
22.3 Home
managers are not allowed to modify the road team players during the game.
23.0 Saving and Naming Manager Profiles
23.1 MPs
should be named in a way so the home manager clearly knows which MP to download
that month. Try not to use Yankees MP.
23.2 A
manager profile may be team specific (i.e., June Team1 MP vs. Team 2) or
generically used for all away opponents.(i.e., June Yankees MP vs. All Teams)
24.1 Your
complete rotation must be posted in Yahoo along with your MP.
24.2 This
rotation can be any digital format and must include your complete rotation from
the beginning of the season up to and including the entire current month. i.e.,
If you're playing June games the rotation should be from April through to
June. i.e., all games in one file
24.3 Some
teams like creating their entire season rotation, which can also be posted.
24.4 Please note: While playing your monthly
games you can alter your home rotation. SP’s must still have three days rest
between starts. An updated rotation should be posted on Yahoo.
25.1 Managers
will play their own home games using the MP that their opponent
sends them at the beginning of each month.
25.2 There is a short grace period between the posting of the monthly database and the playing of actual games. Games should not be played until the 25th of each month.
25.3 The
home manager has the responsibility of making sure the proper road MP is loaded
before playing their games. One penalty point will be issued for the road MP not being loaded.
25.4 Managers
should let the computer handle the SP’s and lineups as defined by the road team
MP.
25.5 There
is nothing to prevent two managers agreeing to play head to head (either using
net play or face to face).
25.6 Player
usage should be reset at the beginning of each series.
25.7 All
special instructions must be executed before the game is started, since no
in-game changes are allowed.
25.8 The
commissioner will simulate any series computer vs. computer when the home
team uses the wrong road MP.
26.0 Submitting your Monthly Results (Reporting)
26.1 The
deadline for sending in monthly results is the third Friday of every
month.
26.2 Final
end of the month statistics should be exported and placed in your team folder
on the Yahoo Groups website.
26.3 Try
using the current month and your team in the name. i.e., YankeesJulyResults.zip
26.4 You
do not need to re-post your rotation unless changes were made during the month.
27.1 The commissioner will be responsible for the following:
28.1 Position
players are limited to 110% of plate appearances (this is how the game measures
usage, listed on the far right of the player profile).
28.2 Players
with less than 500 plate appearances may only be used up to 200% of their plate
appearances against each side. (Left/Right) This is intended to apply to switch
hitters as well.
28.3 Exception: Players with a .230 batting
average or lower may be used to a maximum of 200% but are still limited to 200%
of their plate appearances against each side (Left/Right).
29.1 Only
pitchers with a rating of starter may start.
29.2 Starting
pitchers may be used 110% of their GS up to a limit of 35 rounding up or down
as appropriate. i.e., 31.5 would equal 32 GS
29.3 Exception: if a pitcher has more than 35 starts in real life he may be used for that
number of starts in the current BYOF season.
31.1 Swingmen
are defined as players who both start and relieve during the BYOF season.
31.2 Swingmen
are limited to both 110% of batters faced and 110% of games started.
32.0 Pitchers Usage Exceptions
32.1 Starting
Pitchers with an ERA greater than 5.50 may double their games started up to a
limit of 35.
32.2 Relief
Pitchers with an ERA is greater than 5.50 may used up to 200% of their batters
faced.
32.3 Swingmen
with an ERA greater than 5.50 may double their games started up to a limit of
35 and limited to 200% of their batters faced.
33.1 Penalize any player under the following criteria:
33.2 For
every two players that are over used you lose your highest available draft pick
at the time of the infraction.
33.3 The
first pick lost will be the ML pick and the second pick lost will be a MiL
pick.
33.4 The
lost pick will be replaced in the next round at the same spot
33.5 Overused
players must be farmed immediately for the rest of the season.
33.6 Overused
players are not eligible for the postseason.
33.7 Overused
players are not eligible to be claimed as FA’s.
34.0 Over Usage Penalties General Comments
34.1 Since
all overused players must be farmed after going over 110% -- any manager caught
deliberately using a player beyond 110% will lose their highest ML draft pick.
i.e., Jones is at 111% at the end of June and is used in any remaining months.
34.2 Managers
should plan their usage for 100% and use the remaining 10% as a safety
net.
34.3 If
you run your players to the maximum then you run the risk of over using that
player. i.e., extra inning games or manager mistake
34.4 Over
usage is not disputable as it’s the manager’s responsibility.
35.0 Common Over Usage Mistakes
35.1 When
acquiring FA’s or trading for players you must watch for players combined
usage/stats. When a player switches leagues DMB only shows the new league
stats. Please
view sample screen shot
35.2 Not
setting up your MP correctly, i.e., SP’s or not farming players. You can also
define positions players to not pinch hit vs. one side.
35.3 Watch
players with a low number of PA’s against one side. i.e., 20 AB’s vs. LHP
35.4 Monitor
road results since some over usage is due to home manager using the wrong road
MP.
35.5 Please
report these errors to the commissioner to prevent over usage penalties.
36.0 Losing Draft Picks Due to Penalties
36.1 Losing
draft picks will alternate between the highest ML pick and the highest MiL
pick. If more picks are needed it goes back to the ML draft, etc.
36.2 If
a team leaves the league these draft pick penalties are waived for the new
manager.
37.1 Each
season two managers will be selected to run the BYOF All-Star Game.
37.2 We
would like to have one AL manager and one NL manager.
37.3 Any
manager(s) that are interested should contact the commissioner.
37.4 The
managers will select the players, play the game head to head and write an
article on the event.
37.5 Rosters
have 30 players on them and must include at least one player from each team
37.6 This
game will be played in July near the MLB All-Star Game.
38.1 The
league will vote on MVP, Cy Young, Best Reliever and Manager of the Year for each
league
38.2 Managers
will submit 3 players for each award.
38.3 Mangers
will only vote for awards in their league.
38.4 Voting
points will be 5 points for first, 3 points for second and 1 point for third
place.
38.5 The
commissioner will inform everyone about the date to submit these.
39.1 The
postseason will begin two scheduled days after the season ends.
39.2 There
will be four rounds of postseason including the two division winners and the four wild card teams with the best records from the other 10 teams.
39.3 The
four rounds are the Wildcard Series, Division Series, League Championship Series and the World
Series
39.4 The Wildcard Series will have the four wildcard (WC) teams play each other with the winners advancing to the Division Series. The WC team with the best record will play the WC team with the worst record. The other two WC teams will play each other.
39.5
The Division Series will have the division winner with best record plays the WC winner with the worst record, the other division winner would play the other WC team.
39.6 The
remaining matchups will pit the team with the best overall record against the team with
the worst overall record.
39.7All
series will be a best of seven in a 2-3-2 format.
39.8 One day
off will be scheduled after games 2,5 and 7
39.9 Home field advantage will go to the division winners and tie breakers will be used for the any other series.
39.10 Playing
postseason games via Net Play is strongly encouraged but not mandatory. Some
teams play human vs. computer for the first four games and H2H for the rest.
40.1 Position

43.1 No
substitutions can be made for a batter/fielder until the 6th inning unless the
opposing starting pitcher is removed.
43.2 All
usage is determined by MLB stats and not DMB season stats.
43.3 Starting
pitchers must have three days rest. Rotations carry over from the regular
season and from series and to series.
43.4 Starting
pitchers must have three days rest before appearing in relief.
43.5 Playoff usage will not be reset after each series. i.e., a reliever pitching in game 7 may be tired in game #1 of the next series.
44.0 Postseason Over Usage Penalties
44.1 If a player does not follow the above playoff usage rules the following penalties will apply:
44.2 Exception: If this happens in a game that is human vs. computer the computer may bring players in early.
45.0 Postseason Teams with Excessive Over Usage
45.1 If a team has numerous players overused it will be
determined by the commissioner if they can still participate in the playoffs.
45.2 If the team is still able to play these teams will be
able to claim FA’s to fill usage on their playoff roster. These players cannot
be protected.
45.3 If a team cannot participate in the playoffs the team
with the next best record will take their spot.
46.1 October 15th is the deadline for turning in your ML
protected lists to the league office.
46.2 Please e-mail this to the commissioner.
46.3 The following should be included in your ML protected
list.
46.4 Do not include MiL players on this list.
46.5 These players should be listed in this format -- Last
Name, First Name. i.e., Pujols, Albert.
46.6 All players not protected are then released to free agency and are eligible in the upcoming ML or MiL draft.
47.0 ML Demotions, MiL Promotions, and Releases
47.1 MiL promotions, demotions and releases may begin a
few days after the ML protected lists are submitted.
47.2 The commissioner will inform everyone about the date
to submit these.
48.1 Any player on your 20 man ML protected list who still
qualifies for the MiL’s may now be moved to your MiL Roster. If you move one
player this would leave you with 19 on the ML roster.
48.2 Any player protected who missed the entire MLB season must either be moved to the minors or released
48.3 Any player who did not play during the past MLB season and is moved to the minors will have ' UC ' added to the end of their first name.
i.e., Sheets, BenaaaUC
49.1 Any player on the minor league roster who played in the majors (i.e., will be rated on the upcoming DMB season disk)
may at the owner’s discretion be promoted to the ML roster.
49.2 These players are added to your 20 man ML Roster.
49.3 This MiL to ML can be reversed or changed at any point
up to the trade deadline and before the ML Draft.
49.4 Any MiL player who now exceeds the MiL limits must either be released or moved to the ML roster at this point.
50.1 An owner may release any or all of his minor league
players at his discretion.
50.2 You can name your releases with your ML Demotions and
Promotions or prior to the MiL Draft.
51.1 There will be three drafts held after the new Diamond Mind season disk comes. (ML, MiL and Free Agent Draft).
52.1 The draft order will have the first 4 spots in each
draft chosen randomly from the four BYOF teams with the worst records in a NBA
draft fashion.
52.2 The last spot in the draft will go to the World Series
winner, the 23rd to the WS runner up, the 22nd and 21st to the LCS losers in
reverse order of wins, the 17th-20th spots will go to the DCS losers in reverse
order of wins and the 13th-16th spots will go to the WC losers in reverse order of wins.
52.3 The draft orders for the ML draft and MiL draft will
not necessarily be the same.
53.1 The ML draft will start in the second/third week of January
53.2 The commissioner will announce the date.
53.3 The ML draft will include all free agents on the
current DMB disk.
53.4 The ML draft will be conducted first and will stop
when all teams have a 35 man ML Roster.
53.5 The draft will be a maximum of 15 rounds.
54.1 The MiL draft will then commence and will stop when
all teams have a full 10-man minor league roster.
54.2 The commissioner will announce the date.
54.3 The MiL draft will be open to all players not
already on a roster. These can be un-owned players on the current DMB disk,
minor league, amateur, and foreign players.
54.4 If the player has played in MLB he must still qualify for the minor leagues.
54.5 The MiL draft will be a maximum of 10 rounds unless a
penalized team needs more players.
55.0 Submitting MiL Player Information
55.1 Each manager will need to send the commissioner all
personal information regarding MiL draft picks. i.e., First Name, Last Name,
DOB, Bats, Throws, Team (HS, College, Minor League/ML team)
55.2 The venue to do this may change so you will be
notified around the draft.
56.1 There will also be a FA draft before the
season to make sure all ML rosters have 35 men on them.
56.2 This will occur shortly after the MiL Draft.
56.3 Any team with less then 35 ML players is eligible for
this draft.
56.4 If you have 35 ML players and you want to participate
you must first release a player from your ML roster. At this point you will get
added to the draft.
56.5 The released player then becomes eligible to be
drafted by another team.
56.6 The FA draft will occur in the same fashion/draft
order as the ML draft until all teams have 35 ML players.
57.1 Penalty points will be issued for the following infractions.
1 point for the following:
10 points - Late emailing of protected list 10 points – Using Minor League (AAA) player not on season disk
57.2 For every 10 points your highest draft pick will be lost starting with ML draft.
58.1 The league will use the most current version of
Diamond Mind Baseball. Currently this is version 9.0. We are also all using V9
patch 9c.
58.2 To check what you're using, go to the Diamond Mind
Help menu and click on "About Diamond Mind Baseball". If it does not say 9c you will need to
install.
58.3 If you need the 9c patch please download
and run it here.
58.4 Managers must purchase the season disk from DMB or they cannot participate in the upcoming season..
58.5 Individual member’s ownership of the disk will be
verified with Diamond Mind to avoid any copyright infringement.
59.0 Diamond Mind Game Settings
59.1 Injuries
will be set to none.
59.2 BYOF uses
Clutch and Jam ratings.
Additional Rules (including Tiebreakers)
60.1 The tiebreaker to be used for postseason home field advantage and for any draft order are as follows:
60.2 Tiebreakers for FA claims are reverse for the above. e.g., the worst head to head, worst away record, etc.
61.0 Regular Season Tiebreaker Game
61.1 Regular season tiebreakers will be played the first day after the season.
61.2 Rotations continue from the regular season.
61.2 Postseason rules apply.
61.3 Usage will be reset before game.
61.4 The commissioner will send out a new database.
61.5 Usage will be reset for all tiebreaker teams advancing to the postseason.
62.1 The league website is http://www.byofonline.com
62.2 Some items that will be found here are:
63.0 Disputes Appeals and Grievances
63.1 All issues should be directed to the commissioner.
63.2 The league committee will handle all voting.
63.3 Over usage is not grounds for dispute unless the home
manager did not follow the correct instructions or used the wrong manager
profile.
64.1 Managers who are continually late or accumulate
numerous penalty points can be placed on probation.
64.2 Managers will be given a warning.
64.3 Removal can occur if problems persist.
65.1 BYOF encourages managers to send in suggestions to the
league committee throughout the year.
65.2 The league committee will review proposed rule changes
and comments from managers.
65.3 From time to time unique situations occur which the
constitution does not cover or an interpretation of the constitution is
required. In these cases it will be at the sole discretion of the commissioner.
65.4 BYOF recognizes that from time to time there are
circumstances (Computer, vacation, work and personal problems) that prevent a
manager from filing on time. It is the manager’s responsibility to notify the
league office if there is a problem or a foreseeable problem.
65.5 BYOF is for everyone’s enjoyment. If you have a
problem let the league committee know immediately and we will do our best
to work with you so you do not incur penalties. A lack of consideration to
others, by not communicating your problems will be viewed unfavorably.
65.6 In order to have a successful organization BYOF
encourages our members to interact with one another. Anyone can set up a season
at home and play the games, but by joining a league you're committing yourself
to sharing your experiences with others that share your passion for this hobby.
Now go out there, have fun and Build Your Own Franchise.
Thank you the BYOF league committee.
