Rocky Hall wins first BYOF title
Congratulations to Rocky Hall on winning his first BYOF World Series championship. The AL Champions defeated the NL Champion Winnipeg Goldeyes in a thrilling seven games.
Brandon Claussen was named series MVP as he collected 2 wins on the strength of 16 2/3 innings giving up one unearned run. After the RedStockings were thumped 18-1 he tossed a CG win and then, when the Cincy team was down 3 games to 2 he fired 7 2/3 innings of shut out ball. Cincy’s team ERA after the 18-1 game #1 thumping was 1.90.

Game #1 -- 18-1 Winnipeg
Russ Adams and Sean Hillenbrand go 4-6, Crisp 3-6 and Jason Lane 2-6 as both have four RBI’s, in a gm #1 rout of Derek Lowe and the Cincy RedStockings. The Goldeyes score 4 in the 1st and 8 in the 1st four then continue to thump reliever Kerry Wood for an impressive gm#1 victory. Patterson throws 3 hit ball for 8 innings.
Game #2 -- 5-1 Cincy
Branden Claussen throws a CG 4-hitter, allowing only one unearned run in evening the series at 1 game apiece. Todd Walker, whose 1st inning error gave the Goldeyes and early lead drills a 2 out 2 run double in the bottom of the 4th. Easley’s 2 out fifth inning plates two more and DeRosa’ solo homer plates the final tally.
Game #3 -- 2-1 Winnipeg
Coco Crisp continues his hot hitting, going 3-4 and driving in both runs. Brad Lidge earns the save by retiring Chavez with the tying and winning runs on base in the 9th. Tomo Ohka throws 8 2/3 of impressive ball for Winnipeg. Series is now 2-1, Winnipeg.
Game #4 -- 6-5 Cincy
Cincy’s rookie Zack Duke evens the series with 7 innings of 3 run ball. Derrick Turnbow struggles by allowing two runs and FOUR walks in one inning of work. Juan Padilla gets the save but the big play is Austin Kearns throw to 3rd nailing Jeff Kent, who would have been the tying run. Matt Stairs followed with a game ending fly out, which would have been a game typing SF. 4 run 2nd inning gives Cincy too big a lead for Goldeyes.
Game #5 -- 5-4 Winnipeg
Mark Ellis hits a1st inning 2 run homer only to see Winnipeg come back in the bottom of the inning w/2 out to tie it up on a single by Gomes and double by Kent. Derek Lowe singles in Cabrera in the 5th and Gomes’ homer in the 6th ties it back up. Tony Clark’s SF put the Red Stockings up in the 8th only to see that man, Gomes again, drill a 2 out 2 run homer off Kiko Calero. Lidge shuts out the visitors in the 9th, aided by Geoff Zahn throwing out 2 attempted base stealers, including DaVanon to end the game. Jonny Gomes goes 3-4 2 homers and four RBI’s.
Game #6 -- 1-0 Cincy
Brandon Claussen out duels Barry Zito as both offenses are completely shut down. The lone run scores on a bases loaded error by Iguchi in the 6th.
Game #7 -- 8-3 Cincy
A 11th inning Larry Walker 2 run homer is erased on a 2nd inning Jeff Kent homer after a Gomes triple. Jim Edmonds, who had struggled through the playoffs doubles in 2 in the bottom of the 4th after Valentin singled and Chavez doubled with 2 out. Seldom used and once released Aaron Small gives the ball to Juan Padilla with 2 on and 2 out in the 5th. Padilla gets out the jam and delivers with 2 innings of shut out ball. A 5th Cincy run scores on a Eric Chavez SF in the 7th. Cincy tacks on 2, Winnipeg 1 for a final 8-3 score.
